This can be found as a slideshow presentation on the Huffpost. A Lenten tradition in Western Christianity is to meditate upon the journey Christ took to calvary. These stations or steps are found both in the Scriptures and in the traditions and legends of catholic Christianity. For many this practice is used to participate in the suffering and sacrifice endured by Christ. I encourage you to also take up this journey seeing within each station a calling for the modern, progressive Christian to grow in the ways and love of God. Meditate upon each station considering the questions or thoughts presented with a Scriptural verse to ponder and a brief prayer of the heart. In John 15:12 Jesus tells us, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Only by walking with Christ and seeing just how much he truly loved everyone can we begin to love others in the same fashion.
“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Genesis 2:7 (NIV)
God, help me to see you in all people, those I love and those I must learn to love. Amen.
“Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (ESV)
God, help me to be like Jesus, never afraid to help another. Amen.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us...” Hebrews 12:1 (ESV)
God, I often make mistakes and stumble from fear or lack of trust. Help me to always get up again and continue in a life journey of love. Amen.
Fourth Station: Jesus Meets his Holy Mother
“As a mother comforts her child, so will I, God, comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” Isaiah 66:13 (NIV)
God, help me to forgive those who have hurt me and may I never forget your love is endless. Amen.
“But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?” I John 3:17 (ESV)
God, may I never allow my pride to stop me from helping another. Amen.
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 (ESV)
God, help me to be a vessel of your joy, healing broken hearts with your love. Amen.
“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.” I Peter 2:21 (ESV)
God, forgive for the time I have ignored another’s pain or even added to it by speaking against them instead of loving them. Amen.
“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4 (ESV)
God, help me to always be a carrier of your divine love even in times when I would rather lash out or ignore those around me. Amen.
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will say, ‘Lord, when did we do these things? And the King will say, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ ” Matthew 25:25-30, abbrev.
God, help me to see those in need and meet that need as I am able. Amen.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)
God, help me to never hide behind my religion as an excuse to hate another or withhold your love because I do not agree with someone else. Amen.
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 (ESV)
God, grant me the strength to accept when change is necessary and healthy. Amen.
“The mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:6b (NIV)
God, help me to find peace in your love when it seems all is lost. Amen.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 (NIV)
God, help me to never forget that I am a beautiful person. Amen.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. Psalm 23:4 (NLT)
God, I do not always understand why things happen, some are your will and some are not, but may I always expect and seek after your resurrectional power. Amen.
